Increasing concerns about new EU rule

Publié le par Jean Arnal

EU has proposed to apply the same requirements on advertising content and production quotas imposed to traditional television to many Internet "broadcasts". IPTV, mobile TV and online gaming should be hit by the rule. The European Parliament is scheduled to vote on the proposal before the end of the year, then the Council of Ministers has to approve it. So voices raise against this law, led by UK regulator Ofcom and Intellect, a U.K. trade association including Vodafone, Cisco, Yahoo and many others. They warned that the rule could devastate EU' s Internet TV, mobile multimedia and online gaming industries, with Internet broadcasters simply moving offshore to escape the regulation. If they do not contest that some TV-like warrant some protection, they focus most of their lobbying activity today in gaining exemptions for particularly vulnerable services (online gaming, blogs, on-demand and interactive video, ...).
