According to The Mobile World, there are now over 2.6bn mobile users in the world, and the number should grow to 2.7bn by the end of the year. Mobile density should currently be just below 40%. Annual net additions should exceed 500m this year. Out of the 2.7bn figure, there would be over 2.2bn GSM/WCDMA users. 3G customers would account for over 5% of global mobile users, or about 140m at the end of the year. Annual handset sales should exceed 1bn units for the first time in 2006, with a record 300m sold in 4Q06 alone. India and China are the fastest growing mobile markets in the world, each adding an average of over 4.5m new customers per month.
