Robust cellphone shipments in 2Q06

According to IDC, 471m units have been shipped so far in 2006 (238m in 2Q06), with a 2% increase in 2Q (qoq) and 22.5% increase yoy. IDC, however, does not forecast that the milestone of 1 billion handsets shipped in a single year to be surpassed this year. Nokia shipped 78.4m units in the quarter with the success of its E-series and N-series device lines. It has a 33% market share. Motorola shipped some 52m units, thanks to its successful RAZR products and its iDEN phones and achieved a 22% market share. Samsung is far behind with 26.3m units shipped and a 11% market share. Behind are Sony Ericsson with a 6.6% market share, then LG with 6.4%.
