Mobile banking

Mobile banking is a current hot topic. Recent announcements confirm that banks, MNOs and financial institutions are working hard on the matter. One of three major financial institutions worldwide is planning to launch mobile banking services within two years, according to Sybase 365. Carphone Warehouse, Monitise and Metavante Technologies will launch a mobile money application. Even regional operators such as Cellular South targets to expand m-banking offerings. I cannot report on all trials worldwide, but it is clear that the main disadvantage of such trials is the current lack of compatibility between systems. Mobile banking requires more than local and specific networks. Problems are yet there and will need time to be solved. The market will be mature when there will be only few systems working and compatible.
