  • ð    Computer Industry Almanac published the results of their worldwide PC survey. The number of PC installed at the end of 2004 was 820m, of which 224m in the US, 69m in Japan, 53m in China, 46m in Germany, 36m in the UK and 30m in France. So top 6 countries account for 56% of the total market.
  • ð    Dell’Oro found that Ethernet switch market revenues would increase to $18bn in 2009 from $13.6bn in 2004.
  • ð    Fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) revenues will reach $80bn in 2009 according to Pyramid Research.
  • ð    Very interesting survey on mobile video. According to In-Stat, 12% of respondents indicated they were interested in purchasing mobile video services from their wireless carrier, while 66% of mobile phone subscribers are not yet ready for video services on their handsets. The conclusion is simple: mobile video does not yet appear to have widespread appeal in the short-term, that does not prevail any further interest later.
  • ð    TGn Synch, WWiSE and MitMot (all three are tentative standardization fora) decided to develop a joint proposal for the 802.11n wireless market.
  • ð    Venture Development unveiled its assessment for the Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystems infrastructure equipment market: $2.6bn by 2008 with a CAGR of 67%.
  • ð    GSA confirmed there were 70 UMTS networks deployed in 30 countries in May 2005, serving some 24m subscribers (more than 50% in Japan only).
  • ð    Media Labs (MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology) has unveiled the HDL project (Hundred Dollar Laptop) providing a $100 laptop computer. Chinese companies have expressed their interest and could manufacture up to 6m units in the first year of availability. Other developing countries such as India, Brazil, could be also interested.
  • ð    In-Stat forecasts service provider capex to reach $278bn in 2009, up from $207bn in 2004.
