Mobile Phone Shipments: What characterized the worldwide mobile phone market in 2Q05 were impressive shipments of entry-level mobile phones to both developing and mature markets. IDC found that almost 189m units were shipped in the quarter (+16% yoy), as well as Strategy Analytics that found an 18% growth. Gartner announced a 22% growth rate and market reaching 190m units. Europe grew 20% to reach more than 37m units shipped. Growth has been mainly beneficial to Nokia and Motorola. Nokia increased its leadership, claiming a 32% market share with more than 60m units delivered. It is now number one in LATAM and number 3 in NA. Motorola reached a new company record with almost 34m units sold and a market share of 18%. Samsung posted 24.4m units sold and almost 13% market share, relatively steady. LG reported a 6.4% market share with 12m units shipped, just ahead of Sony Ericsson with 6.3% market share and 11.8m units. Siemens continues its slide down to 4.7% market share. Gartner is therefore increasing its market assessment to 800m units in 2005.
