Undersea telecom market - 5 June 2005

Submarine telecom market: after years of turmoil and shrinking revenues with quasi no new demand, the undersea system market could be close to $1.5bn this year, up from $380m in 2004. With bandwidth demand growing about 40% a year, overcapacity is steadily eroded and some transoceanic routes will require new systems within next seven years. Alcatel has maintained its leading position in the market, but Corning has established a strong position in the repeaterless segment.
