A few set of market information released this week:

[      According to Arthur D Little and Exane BNP Paribas, European mobile operators would continue to increase revenues (+7% in 2005 and +4.5% CAGR over the 2005-2007 period) and cash, but as the market is becoming tougher, it will need increased effort. Growth will be driven by Voice (~1%), focus on new segments (under 15 and over 65) and cost cutting.

 

[      Thalys trains (between Paris and Brussels) would be equipped with WiFi broadband Internet access. Commercial trial will be launched soon and Thalys targets to equip trains in 2006. The move follows Deutsche Bahn starting equipping ICE trains in Germany, and Japan Telecom testing similar service in Japan.

[       IBM, Oracle, Nokia, Red Hat and RealNetworks are supporting the EU Commission against Microsoft.

 

[      According to Infonetics Research, worldwide PON equipment revenue hit $525m in 2004, and could grow to $2.2bn by 2008. PON subscribers could grow to 22m by 2008 from current 1.4m. Today, the market is split 76% in Asia and 20% in NA, but could be 39% in APAC, 43% in NA.

[      India’s hotspots are expected to grow to 30,000 from current 3,000.

 

[      Push-To-Talk (PTT) and Push-To-Talk Over Cellular (PoC) subscriber number is expected to expand slowly over the next five years, according to In-Stat. US subscriber number could about double over the next five years to 33-34m, but worldwide market could increase slightly faster than in the US.

 

[      IDC forecast 27m US residential VOIP subscribers in 2009, from 3m today.

 

[      Juniper Research assesses the worldwide sport content market to $ 1.3bn this year, with EU generating about 69% of worldwide revenues.

 

[      A new report from BroadGroup forecasts that data center market in Europe could reach € 745mby 2007.

 

[      BMI-TechKnowledge expects mobile subscribers in the SADC-Kenya-Uganda region could reach 45m in 2008. Outside South Africa, growth rate could be 35% p.a. versus 13% in global for the region.

 

[      According to a new survey from the Association of Flight Attendants and the National Consumers League, consumers are opposed to cellular phones in flight.

    • Synergy Research reported that IP has driven global telecom equipment market growth of 13%+.
