European broadband market shares
According to Infocom, while broadband penetration and competition increased for most of Western Europe and Eastern European countries in 2005, it is not a fatality for incumbents to experience a drop in market share. It is true that big incumbents lost several points, but they are in large countries and control a large market share. It is the case for DT in Germany with about 75% market share and loosing some 10 points to competition. It is also the case for Telecom Italia loosing about 1 point market share in 2005. Symmetrically, some incumbents are gaining market share, while their market is highly competitive. As an example, BT gained 3 points. Swisscom achieved also 3 points more, as well as Cesky Telecom. Infocom analyzed the reasons driving these opposite trends and said that in countries where the usage of ULL is low and DSL subscriptions are outpacing cable modem growth, incumbent can increase their market control. Europe (West + East) accounts for about 58m broadband users in 2005, or 28% of the world market, according to Point Topic.
