Telecom in Brazil

The Brazilian Statistics Institute (IBGE) has recently released research on household expenditure in Brazil. Here are the main trends in 2004:

  • 16.5% of Brazil's households only had access to mobile telephony, up from 7.8% in 2001.
  • 17.8% of households only had access to fixed telephony, down from 31.8% in 2001.

  • 31.8% of homes had access to both forms of communication, up from 23.2% in 2001.

  • The total proportion of households with both or either form of communication was 66.1% in 2004, up from37.6% in 2001.

  • Internet penetration was 12.4% of households in 2004; PC penetration was 16.6%.

What the survey reveals is that mobile telephony has become the entry point for households that previously had no form of electronic communication and that mobile-only homes mainly concern low incomes. In reaction, the government is seeking to stimulate fixed-line growth through providing discounts to low-income households.
