Chinese 3G System Ready for Deployment

Chinese 3G System Ready for Deployment:  We learned, two-month ago, that the Chinese homegrown TD-SCDMA technology was not ready, had technology flaws and as a consequence, 3G licenses could be delayed until early 2006. Today it is another story, product industrialization has been achieved as least by two vendors (Datang and Alcatel working together), and products are ready for deliveries. We knew the tandem Datang-Alcatel was close to the final product after the live demo of an end-to-end TD-SCDMA solution during the TD-SCDMA International Summit in Beijing in April, but the loud voice concert of main local actors against TD-SCDMA had introduced doubt.

It is very good news indeed and the promise that the Chinese market will start develop its 3G infra as soon as possible. It is good news for everybody: for Chinese officials who supported the technology and can now draw benefit of a homegrown technology (see China and Japan story on 4G), for Chinese and foreign vendors proving the high technological level of local engineers, and for local mobile operators keen to participate as soon as possible in the 3G adventure.
