A few set of market information released this week:

  • According to M:Metrics, the ringback tones market continue to gain traction. In the US, the number of subscribers using downloaded ringback tones more than tripled in past eleven months. In Europe, the figure grew by about 150% during the year. It underscores that personalization remains an important motivation for mobile content purchases.

  • According to ABI Research, high handset royalty rates are preventing the development of more affordable devices (particularly for WCDMA handsets). Today, WCDMA handset royalty rate stands at 9.4%, versus 5% for industry-accepted standard for consumer devices.

  • According to Telephia, 10% of US mobile subscribers are now using phones with integrated music players. 20% of new phones purchased are music-powered.

  • According to IDC, worldwide IT spending would reach $1.5tr by 2010, with a CAGR of 6.3%. IT services would amount to $ 581bn; hardware expenditure to $562bn and software spending to $327bn.

  • According to Ovum, China is the most promising market for mobile value-added services (WVAS). WVAS services would generate $11.5bn in revenues in China by 2010.

  • Gartner forecasts that total telecom service revenues would only modestly grow over the next four years to $1.5tr by 2010 with a CAGR of 3.6%, but shrinking to 1.7% in 2010.

  • ABI Research finds that WiMAX is more energy-efficient than cellular for mobile broadband: 50 times more than WCDMA and 2 times better than metro WiFi.
