Mobile LATAM survey
3G Americas reports that there are 290m mobile subscribers in Latam, of which 97m in Brazil, 53m in Mexico, 31m in Colombia, 27m in Argentina, 12.5m in Chile. Mobile penetration is uneven in the region, with Brazil reaching 60%, Mexico 76%, Colombia 83%, Argentina 82% or Chile 70%.
GSM technology accounts for 2/3 of the market while CDMA accounts for 21% and TDMA for remaining 11%. Brazil has the largest number of GSM subscribers with about 58m, followed by Mexico with about 38m, Colombia with 26m and Argentina with 22m. RadioMovil (Mexico) is the largest regional individual operator with about 30m GSM subscribers, but its parent company America Movil accounts for 36% of the regional market. TIM Brazil reports about 20m GSM subscribers and 12% of the regional market. Telefonica holds a comfortable 28% market share. Claro and Telemar (both in Brazil) are the only other operators having more than 10m subscribers (respectively 16m and 12m).
