European commitment
European commitment
34 European ITC ministries have committed on June 12 in Riga to help all European citizens using ITC technologies and fill the digital divide. The e-inclusion project targets at least three main objectives:
- halving the gap in internet usage by groups at risk of exclusion, such as older people, people with disabilities, and unemployed persons,
- boosting broadband coverage in Europe to at least 90% (from current 60% in rural areas and 90% in urban zones), and achieve a broadband penetration of at least 50% of households by 2010.
- making all public web sites accessible by 2010.
The plan will try to overcome economic, social, educational, territorial or disability-related disadvantages across Europe.
