A few set of market information released this week:
[ Multimedia Research forecast IPTV market could reach $7.2bn by 2008 (from $0.6bn in 2004), and IPTV subscribers grow from 1.9m in 2004 to 25m in 2008.
[ According to IDC, the French VOIP market was worth 165m in 2004, of which 61% in equipment.
[ According to Jupiter Research, ringtone revenue should reach $724m in 2009, up from $217m in 2004. Mobile gaming revenue also is expected to grow to $430 million in 2009, up from $72m in 2004.
[ IDC reports that the Western EU IP VPN market should grow to $5.8bn by 2009, from $4.3bn in 2004.
[ In 2004, there were some 820m PC units in operation in the world, of which 220m units were added in 2004. Growth is driven by developing countries. US has the largest unit base with some 224m units, largely ahead of Japan with 69m and China with 53m. Germany leads Europe with 46m, followed by the UK with 36m and France with 30m.
[ Skype reached 1m-user mark. Skype is a global provider of VoIP services.
[ According to IDC, software storage revenues grew 16% to $7.9bn in 2004. EMC (32%) and Veritas (22%) dominate the market.
[ Dittberner unveiled its OSS market assessment. The OSS market should grow to $870m in 2008 from $728 m in 2004. Dittberner sees the market uniting around a widely accepted standard: J2EE. J2EE application servers will capture 78% of the OSS/BSS middleware market in 2008. BEA and IBM are the two main current J2EE server suppliers. But OSS/BSS middleware development should come from the rise of a new class of tools, the so-called OSS/J middleware.
European Commission, vendors and operators join efforts to ensure Europe plays a key role in future mobile developments and technology. The project is a 2bn research initiative, called eMobility Technology Platform.
