Paris plans FTTH municipal network
The office of the Mayor of Paris has announced a bidding process plan to hook up "all of Paris" with high-bandwidth optical fiber connections. The network (worth about €1bn) would be commissioned and owned by the city authorities, run by the city or a third party, and then made available to any service provider that wants to market its services to the customer base. The goal is to provide free local telephony and basic Internet access services. The announcement comes just after Amsterdam (Holland) chooses launching the first phase of an "open network" municipal FTTH network.
