Broadband wireless future
According to WiFi Networking, 2006 predictions for broadband wireless could be:

  • 802.11n standard would be drafted in 2006 and ratified in 2007. But several draft-compatible chipsets could be unveiled in 3Q06.

  • One-button or simple security would appear for home Wi-Fi.

  • Many municipal Wi-Fi networks would be built and hundreds of millions of dollars would be spent.

  • Google is not believed to build a US-wide WiFi network, but could roll out services for municipal-scale Wi-Fi network operators.

  • Wi-Fi hotspots would cross 200,000 worldwide, from current 100,000.

  • Free and fee hotspots will continue to co-exist.

  • WiFi built-in in more and more consumer electronic devices.

  • Fixed WiMAX would not take off, but would continue to grow slowly, while mobile WiMAX would still be a non-starter.

  • 3G US operators would offer better Wi-Fi plans and VoIP, and offer 3G cell data networks in every major U.S. city.
