Market Corner - 24/12/07

A few set of market information released this week:

• According to IDC, the French PMR market was worth €300m in 2006.

• Infonetics Research forecasts that femtocell shipments would generate $630m revenues in 2010.

• According to In-Stat, there were 5.4m BPL (broadband over powerline) users in the world and the number will continue to grow over the next five years.

• According to GfK, French HD (High definition) products account for over €4bn in 2007, 85% of which is for HD TV sets.

• ABI Research announced that the opportunity for mobile video services would amount to $10bn in 2012 and have a CAGR of nearly 60%.

• Gartner found that the worldwide semiconductor market revenue totaled $270bn in 2007, up 3%.

• According to Horowitz, online video consumption is quickly growing in the US: 61% of broadband internet users watch or download online video content at least once a week.

• Another report from Gartner reveals that SMS is still growing: +20% in volume to 2.3 trillion messages and +16% in value to $60bn in 2008.

• According to In-Stat, the market for Ultrawideband (UWB) is to take off, but not in volume in consumer electronics and mobile phones before 2010. In 2011, over 400m UWB-enabled devices would be shipped.

• According to a new medical study, cell phone use raises the risk of mouth cancer.

• Anatel (Brazilian telecom regulator) predicts that $5.5bn will be invested in the next two years by mobile operators in offering 3G services.
