Internet Control
Internet Control:
The Internet network was born in the US, then has spread over the world, but most of its servers and key elements has remain in the States. It is a fact. The ICANN agency is the administrator of all the Web's domains: be it .com, .uk or .cn. But, .uk or .cn are country-specific extensions and few people found rationales why such domains have to be controlled by the US.
What is behind is a struggle for a worldwide information infrastructure and defining an Internet policy that could profoundly shape international relations in coming years. Up to now, developed countries (US and EU) have cannibalized most of the available addresses required for computers to connect, leaving developing nations with far less possibilities.
It is unacceptable, and basic principles of WTO international commerce suggest that a common vector needed by all nations to equitably commerce should be internationally controlled. The US unilateral control has to be canceled.
An international agency (under the UNO umbrella) should be created to control and manage the internet network. The World Summit on Information Society in Tunis next week has to find a solution.
