Home Gateway

Home gateway is the new battleground for telcos, as controlling the gateway that sits between the network and the customer's home is the path to deliver a broad range of IP-based multimedia services. A new industry body, the Home Gateway Initiative (HGI), gathering more than 56 telcos, vendors and chip makers, is trying to define specifications, but it is a tough work as the specifications the HGI has in mind (a wish list of features to do everything) could be difficult to deliver at an acceptable price point targeted at between €50 and €70. Universality is not cheap; the solution consists in making specialized devices.
