GSM/3G market update

The Global Mobile Suppliers Association, the GSA, has released its latest market update. There were 2.54bn (+28.5% yoy) GSM mobile users at the end of June (over 85% of the global market), 360m CDMA users (+ 18% and 12% of the global market), and 75m (down 36%) other technology users (PDC, TDMA, ...) or 2.5%. End-June, there were 137m (+95%) WCDMA users in the world, and an estimated 63m CDMA 2000 EVDO user base. There are currently 181 UMTS operators in service across 77 countries, with an additional 72 networks planned, in deployment, or in trial. 135 networks already provide HSDPA services, with 80 additional HSDPA networks planned. GSM penetration is over 60% in Western Hemisphere and 74% in CALA.
