Power for mobile phones

Publié le par Jean Arnal

It is the weakest point of mobile phones. On one side, power consumption is increasing with new power-hungry features (color screen, camera, memory capacity, .;) and the other side batteries frequently need to be reloaded and there always have a short life. Most vendors and universities are unsurprisingly interested and focused on the issue. MIT researchers plan that handset recharge could be made via a wireless connection, using non-radiative energy transfer. A mobile phone coul be recharged within a few meters of the power source. Super in theory, but it remains to be industrialized at an affordable price. Another solution could be offered by solar energy. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has succeeded to build a new semiconductor substrat providing enhanced performance and close to 50% efficiency (double of current performance). One day....

More pragmatically, Ericsson, GSMA and Idea Cellular will develop biofuels as a power source for mobile networks in rural India.

Every mobile user complains about batteries and power recharge. A solution is needed. What about a worldwide effort on the subject?

I hope too, but I guess those innovations will not be available short term. It should be interesting also to use the intoduction of disruptive technologies for setting up a standard for power connectors.
