VOIP:
The first remark is that service providers are moving to VOIP their own way (different timetables and with different strategies depending on their service mix). So it has lost its status of hot topic to become a mainstream service. Core pieces (softswitches, media gateways, session border controllers and analog telephone adapters), OSS and network management gear and applications are packaged in ways to satisfy the operator and boost revenues. Security and Quality of service have become major subjects of interest. Of course, the recent FCC order to support E911 service here in the US was widely debated.
But it appears that VOIP deployment is not a rest. Time Warner executive Earl Turner made a splash saying VOIP is not as simple as said. Despite such concerns, however, nobody supports the idea to go back to the TDM world.
