A new White Paper, from Rysavy Research and 3G Americas, provides an overview of the deployment status, and capabilities of current and future mobile wireless technologies. It includes all GSM-based technologies such as EDGE, HSDPA, LTE, and competitive alternatives CDMA 2000 and WiMAX. Current standards (EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA and 3GPP roadmap) provide increasing throughout and flexibility. They have proven extremely successful and are widely deployed. LTE is planned to make significant progress with expected peak downlink speeds of 100 Mbps and peak uplink speeds of 50 Mbps in 20 MHz channels. The main conclusion of the white paper is that the GSM/UMTS ecosystem, serving such an expansive customer base of over 2bn people, will win over other wide-area mobile wireless technologies. The white paper justifies and supports this conclusion.
