m-Commerce era is taking off, and will see tremendous expansion in coming years. The trend, highlighted by Juniper Research, would be marked by the entrance of new players offering m-payment schemes, such as PayPal, offering a new text service called PayPal Mobile. The total number of m-payments is forecast to more than double next year to about 175m. Mobile payments revenues are set to rise to $10bn by 2010, according to Juniper Research. The current advance of Japan in mobile payments is interesting to look at in order to draw trends. I-mode FeliCa service usage, from NTT DoCoMo, suggests that the average transaction value for mobile payments is about 25% higher than purchases made with cards and cash. By 2010, 32% of Japanese mobile users and 15% of European mobile users would be buying tickets using a mobile phone.
