Mobile phone market overview
According to Strategy Analytics, there were 297m units shipped in 2Q08, up 15%. So, it is a quite healthy market, contrasting with pessimistic announcements. Growth rate in 2Q08 was higher than any growth rate during 2007. Nokia continues to maintain a market share of about 41% with 122m units shipped in the quarter, followed by Samsung with a 15.4% market share and 45.7m units shipped. Motorola exceeded expectations delivering 28.1m units and maintaining its third position with a 9.5% market share. LG is on its heels with a 9.3% market share and shipping 27.7m units in the quarter. Sony Ericsson is not far either, with a 8.2% market share and shipping 24.4m units. Only Motorola and Sony Ericsson are reporting declines year-on-year in quarterly sales. Motorola reported a decline of 20% yoy in volume but a growth of 2.5% on 1Q08. Is it the beginning of a turnaround for Motorola? We wish them better days coming and return to profitability. Sony Ericsson reported a 2% decrease and is planning cutting costs and jobs.
On the US Market, the handset market was relatively healthy in 2Q08. 42M units were shipped, up 5%. Motorola remains the market leader with 26% market share, RIM reached a 11% market share while Nokia has a meager 9% market share.
