In contrast with most carriers' strategy, Sprint Nextel is planning to spin off its wireline business, New Local Company. It will rename the wireline company in the first quarter of 2006 and spin off the subsidiary in the second quarter. The new company will be the fifth largest U.S. wireline provider by access lines.
