Me too!
Samsung announced plans to launch an Internet-services strategy for its mobile phones. The strategy is simple (sell services that go along with their hardware) but not really new. It was implemented several times with success: by RIM with the BlackBerry, by Apple with iPod, Sony Ericsson with its PlayNow (music) service, and more recently by Nokia with Ovi. The main advantages are to get loyal users, generate additional revenues both for the handset maker and the operator, and stimulate usage. But launching such a strategy is not so easy. You have first to overcome technical difficulties, then to regularly update and renew content from your own and /or through third parties, creating conflicting risks with your client (operator) and your supplier (content provider) on different matters (pricing, royalties, distribution, marketing, ...). The success is not immediately there. Up to now, the success is tied to a single hardware with specific usage. The strategy is there applied to a complete portfolio with multi-usage, and its success is still to demonstrate. Wait and see!
