Will 3G dominate the mobile market?
Will 3G dominate the mobile market?
According to Forrester, th answer is YES. By 2010, 60% of Europeans would own a 3G handset. Forrester also predicts GSM-only handsets will disappear in the next two years, and pure 2G services would only account for 3% of mobile users in Europe while GPRS will account for 38% in 2008. But taking off will be different from one country to another, according to local conditions (operator aggressiveness, pricing, interest for added value services, ...). UK and Italy are forecast to be yet leading countries. But what is more surprising is that European will have 3G terminals, but will adopt much more slowly Internet mobile services. Prices (high), poor user interface, low bandwidth vs fixed connections, still limited adapted content would have a negative impact on demand. Only 50% of users will regularly use mobile Internet by the end of 2010.
HSDPA launch in 2006-2007 could change a little bit the conclusion, but the customer will have again to change his handset....
