Mobile phones
First estimates on the 2007 mobile handset market are surfacing, and they are converging on the following numbers (I took Strategy Analytics figures). The global market reaches 1.12bn (+12%) units sold in 2007 and is expected to grow to 1.24bn (+10%) units in 2008. The first conclusion is that analysts expect slower growth, mainly due to tougher economic environment.
| Company | 4Q07 shipments | 2007 shipments | 2007 Market share |
| Nokia | 133.5m | 437.1m | 38.8% |
| Samsung | 46.4m | 161.2m | 14.3% |
| Motorola | 41m | 159m | 14.1% |
| Sony Ericsson | 31m | 103.4m | 9.2% |
| LG Electronics | 23.7 | 80.5 | 7.2% |
| Others | 56.7m | 184.3m | 16.4% |
| Total | 332m | 1125m | 100% |
The main question remaining unsolved is the future position of Motorola? Will it be able to solve its problems and regain ground on Samsung or can Sony Ericsson catch up and overtake Motorola in 2008? Both are on very different dynamics. Will be very interesting to see the evolution.
