According to Point Topic, the world installed base of DSL lines grew by over 9% in 3Q05 to pass 125m by 30 September, and could be 137m by the end of the year. MEA (Middle East and Africa) is now the fastest growing region with about 20% in 3Q. Latin America (mainly Argentina, Mexico and Brazil) and Eastern Europe (specially Czech Republic and Slovakia) are the next most fast-growing regions. South East Asia also showed strong growth at 12.9% (particularly in India and China). North America and Western Europe both grew at about the world average rate but several countries grew significantly faster, including Greece, Luxembourg, Finland, Ireland and the UK. The slowest-growing region was Asia-Pacific where major countries such as Japan, Singapore and Taiwan are showing signs of saturation.
DSL continues to be the leading technology in the broadband market (largely ahead of cable modems).
