SMS adoption: The US were one of the few countries that did not adopt SMS (short messaging services) from the start. In 2004, according to Analysys, wireless data accounted for only 4.8% of operators' total mobile services revenue in the US, compared to 16% in Western Europe and 22% in Japan. Elsewhere, SMS was used for a wide variety of services, such as texting to friends, alerting, marketing and advertising, paying low-cost products such as ticketing, polling, and many other applications, Everywhere, SMS is very popular, with Philippines being the champion. So the wireless community enjoyed US operators finally found a way to interconnect their messaging systems, allowing the SMS market to take-off. CTIA says more than 7.2bn SMS messages were sent over U.S. carrier networks in June, up 157%, generating $1,2bn in revenues, up 154%. By 2008, mobile messaging alone will account for 10% ($16.4bn) of US operators' total mobile services revenues. Nobody anticipates a stop in the growth of SMS usage. In-Stat forecasts that worldwide 878bn SMSs will be sent in 2005, rising to 1.5tr in 2008.
