Motorola announced record results
Motorola announced record results: 3Q05 sales were up 26% to $9.4bn and net income rose 300% to $1.75bn. Mobile phone sales accounted for 59% of total revenues and climbed 41% to $5.6bn, while sales at the Network division rose 7% to $1.6bn. The government and enterprise unit grew revenue 4% to $1.6 billion. Motorola shipped 38.7m handsets in the quarter (of which 17% is made by its ultra-slim RAZR cellphone), up 66% and claimed a 19% market share. Regarding operating margin, Motorola reported a first-ever 11% operating margin in its handset division (at $597m), while network division reports a 16.7% operating margin. Net income was boosted by the sale of its stock in Nextel. Motorola has a record $8.4bn cash pile.
