Sanyo (Japan) may sell its loss-making handset division, and could be in talks with mobile phone makers Sharp and Kyocera. The Sanyo phone business is too small with about only 1% market share.

Shortfall: Nokia warns on overheating BL-5C batteries (made by Matsushita). 46m batteries in over 50 handset models are concerned. Nokia offers replacement.

Sony said it will invest $100m to build a lithium ion battery plant in Singapore.

Qiao Xing Mobile (China) has launched a wrist-watch mobile phone, the W100.

Qualcomm has announced it has shipped 300m GPS chipsets.

Ericsson is investing $5m in Brazil to make 3G equipment.

Nortel is teaming with leading universities to develop 4G mobile broadband applications like video, mobile TV and other multimedia services.

ZTE reports that it has exported more than 10m mobile devices in the first half of 2007.
