CALA GSM subscribers

The number of mobile GSM customers in CALA (LATAM + The Carribean) grew by 51% to 231m in 1Q07, according to Informa, accounting now for over 70% of total mobile subscribers in the region. Such a growth, in a region where most analysts said ten years ago that it should be a CDMA annex of the US CDMA market (i.e position of Bellsouth), is the proof that the market has changed. Exit Bellsouth, increased position for Telefonica and America Movil, both recommending and operating GSM networks, are the main steps towards GSM taking over competitive technologies. In addition, GSM handsets are cheaper than CDMA ones, so the customer has rapidly made its choice.
