According to Shanghai Securities News, China may delay 3G licenses until after the 2008 Olympics, after a telecom industry restructuring not expected to start before October this year. It is a several years -long story that China would take benefit of the introduction of 3G technology to restructure its telecom industry. The top four local operators are all expecting getting a 3G licenses (quite normal for mobile operators, new for fixed line operators), and positioning themselves to start services asap (trial networks, collecting financial resources, lobbying, ...). It was said that China Unicom would be split and sold, then denied; even each operator was attributed a likely technology, then forgotten. The latest rumors are that China Mobile would become a "full-play" operator. What else to come?
