Motorola has succeeded a coup in buying Good Technology, whose products offer email synchronization between handhelds and enterprise email systems (mainly Lotus of IBM or Exchange of Microsoft), and challenging dominant Blackberry from RIM or Treo from Palm.

Motorola will also buy Netopia, a broadband gateway provider, for $208m. The deal will boost its Connected Home Solutions business position. Netopia makes wired and Wi-Fi modems, routers and gateways.

Cisco bought Greenfield Networks, a Ethernet IC firm, to boost metro Ethernet functions and features in its portfolio.

Finisar, Infinera, Internet2, Level 3, and Santa Cruz University in California, successfully demonstrated 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100-GbE) transmission across 4,000-km network and over ten 10-Gbit/sec channels. The demo provides a near future implementation path to accommodate bandwidth growth.

EU clears Nokia, Siemens telecom network equipment businesses merger. Nokia Siemens Networks will be the third largest telecom network firm with sales of about €16bn. The value of the deal is worth €25bn. Nokia Siemens Networks does not include Nokia's handset business or the enterprise division of Siemens Comm.

ZTE will build R&D base in Tianjin, northern China region. It will enter the Lesotho' s communications industry, invest in Telecom Lesotho and provide equipment and training.
