EU continues fighting roaming charges in Europe

EU Commissioner Viviane Reding again said current roaming charges were still too high, despite recent moves by phone companies to cut costs. On average, roaming costs are four times higher than national mobile calls. EU wants to cap roaming costs, starting after next summer. In the mean time, she recommends consumers to switch the mobile phones off while being on holidays abroad. Of course, the telecom industry vigorously opposes legislation and claims mobile operators have taken action with prices down 22% since last year. EU said it is too little, just to avoid price capping. I can witness that during my summer holidays in Switzerland, I did not notice any drop in mobile calling prices.
