It is in the air, even if it is not for tomorrow. Several trials are under way worldwide, but a new project is involving five companies: three telecom operators (Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom) and two banks (CIC and BNP Paribas), in short more than 90% of the French mobile market. The project is to install a payment application inside the SIM card and NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, test the concept until mid of 2007, then run pilots, everything in line with the future Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) within the European Union. Five other companies (Gemalto, Inside Contactless, MasterCard, Sagem Communication et Sagem Monétel) intent to join the project.
