A few set of market information released this week:

  • Microsoft plans to offer its Office suite via annual subscription and monthly fee. A first for the software giant.

  • India: Gartner forecasts that the Indian mobile telecom market would grow with a CAGR of 18% on the 2008-2012 period. It could have over 730m mobile users by the end of 2012 on a population of 1.1bn.

  • Mobile videophone are on the rise with growth continuing through at least 2011.

  • Several vendors (including Microsoft, IBM, Intel and Cisco) have formed the Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI).

  • According to a new Strategy Analytics report, the worldwide mobile subscriber base would rise to 5.6bn in 2013, from 3.9m at the end of 2008.

  • The GSM Association and the European Payments Council are partnering to boost the deployment of mobile payment services.

  • At the WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking conference, many carriers said that they don't need 40G now. A reality check!!

  • The GSA association reports that the demand for UMTS 900 MHz is increasing for economical reasons (60% base stations are not needed vs a 2100MHz solution).

  • According to ETNO, the roll-out of New Generation Networks (NGNs) across Europe would cost up to €300bn over a 15-year period.

  • Worldwide WiMAX subscriber base reaches 2m at the end of 1Q08.
