The Open Patent Alliance (OPA) is born

In order to promote WiMAX usage, ALU, Cisco, Intel, Samsung, Sprint-Nextel and Clearwire have formed the Open Patent Alliance (OPA). One of the main goal of the Alliance is to avoid any intellectual property battles that could impede the young wireless broadband technology growth, determine predictable patent license costs and insure interoperability between offerings. The move follows a similar effort for LTE two weeks ago. Interestingly, Qualcomm, that is a strong patent holder, is not participating in the alliance, not Alvarion and Nortel.
