EarthLink (US) plans to sell its WiFi business, adding doubts to the viability of large-scale municipal Wi-Fi mesh projects.

Verizon has successfully tested 100 Gbit/s optical transmission on a live, in-service 500-km network route in Florida. The equipment has been provided by ALU.

Orange UK has signed a deal with The Cloud (UK) to get access to over 10,000 hotspots.

Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) plans the building of an international submarine fire optic cable from Trinidad to Guyana, and links to Brazil and Suriname.

BSNL (India) plans to invest $750m on WiMAX networks ( a first tender has already been issued). BNSL plans to cover over 150 m population in India, 25,000 villages and set-up 50,000 WiMAX kiosks.

Globalcom (Nigeria) has begun the first phase of a $700m countrywide fiber optic project.

ATT launches frame relay and VPN services in Vietnam.

Embratel (Brazil) plans to invest $600m in WiMAX technology in next four months.
