Momentum appears to be building in the mobile banking space. No week without any new service trial or opening. The latest are a GSMA initiative with a dozen of mobile operators to test Near Field Communications payments. More than ten countries are involved in Europe, the US and Asia. On its own side, ATT Mobility has launched a mobile banking platform nationwide. ATT is partnering with Wachovia, SunTrust Banks, Firethorn and CheckFree. In France, the Pegasus project regroups most banks, mobile operators, Visa Europe and MasterCard Worldwide, and retailers.
M&A activity in the sector is naturally following the move: Qualcomm is buying Firethorn, Motorola invests in ViVOtech.
